How it works Azithromycin is a Macrolide antibiotic, so it acts by inhibiting protein synthesis of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal element. Thus shows bacteriostatic (stops bacteria from reproducing) or bactericidal (kills the bacteria) activity depending on the organism and drug concentration.
